Lightweight webchat client - 09/07/2010 - Posted by ThiefMaster

Additionally to the mibbit widget we now have a lightweight ad-free qwebirc-based web chat which you can both use directly or embed it to your site via an IFRAME.

To use it, simply open http://webchat.gamesurge.net/.
To embed it, also open it and then click the qwebirc menu icon icon in the top left corner of the web chat, choose "Add webchat to your website" and follow the steps on the newly opened tab. This will eventually provide you both the direct link and HTML code to embed it to your website.

If you have any feedback/suggestions, feel free to email thiefmaster [at] gamesurge [dot] net or PM me on IRC (/query ThiefMaster)

Network Upgrades (Completed) - 03/12/2010 - Posted by pb

GameSurge will be upgrading the entire network on Saturday March 13th. You will experience outages starting at 07:00 PST/15:00 UTC. You may see problems throughout the weekend as the dust settles. If you wish to keep any channel modes, please remember to use !set modes to keep them. We are upgrading both ircu and srvx during this upgrade. We have been running the new versions on a testnet for a few weeks and feel confident that any problems will be minimal.

srvx (ChanServ/AuthServ) improvements:

  • New account setting: AUTOFAKE: When enabled (/authserv set autofake 1), you will get +x as soon as you auth so you don't have to set +x manually.
  • When users join a +D channel, their infoline will not be shown as their join isn't shown either.
ircu improvement:
  • IPv6 - ipv6.gamesurge.net and/or irc.ipv6.gamesurge.net will be setup soon after the upgrade. An AAAA record for irc.gamesurge.net (i.e. IPv6 via irc.gamesurge.net if your client/os/connection support it) might be added in the future when IPv6 is stable.
  • WebIRC via mibbit (and qwebirc in the near future) will be available on all servers instead of only a single one.
  • The /UMODE command allows setting user modes like +x with /umode +x instead of using things like //mode $me +x.
  • The invite announcement numeric (notifying ops of other ops using /invite) now uses ircu's default syntax ("345 <#channel> : has been invited by "). If you are using a client script to display this information, you might have to change it.

Update: The upgrade has been finished successfully. If you encounter any problems, step into #support and our support staff will be pleased to help you.

Birthday celebrations and Superbowl - 02/08/2010 - Posted by Soul_Chaser

We would like to thank everyone for attending GameSurge's sixth birthday celebration. In all, over 700 of you turned out to a very successful event and we had 3 winners walk away with prizes.

Winners:
3rd place: cF`Rotten (Puretrak mousepad)

Yesterday, we had a party in #superbowl where over 500 people showed up for a fantastic evening and a game between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts, with the Saints being crowned champions by a final of 31-17. As part of this, we once again did a random draw and our lucky winner, Tkavil walked away with a mousepad of his choice!

Stay tuned for upcoming events and prize giveaways in the near future.

GameSurge's 6th birthday! - 01/11/2010 - Posted by Soul_Chaser

We are pleased to announce that on February 3, 2010, we will be celebrating our 6th birthday. The continuous success of this network is all in part due to you, our loyal user base. To show our deep appreciation for your support, we will be giving away numerous prizes to lucky, random users on Friday, February 5, 2010 6PM Pacific time.

Prizes will be provided in part thanks to Pure Voice Communications, Inc. and PureTrak Precision Gaming Gear. “GameSurge has been the heart and soul of the online gaming community and it's our absolute pleasure to be working with the organization that has provided us with years of fun and excitement. Happy birthday GameSurge!” -- Nick Iannotti, PVC Inc.

To be eligible for the giveaways, you MUST be at least 14 years of age and MUST be in #gamesurge on the day and time of the draw. If you are selected, you will be required to provide proof of age.

We hope you will join us for this exciting event!

GameSurge restructuring announcement - 03/31/2009 - Posted by Entrope

MILPITAS, CA -- The GameSurge Board of Directors has released the following announcement:

In today's difficult economy, GameSurge has been coping with declining revenues and rising costs due to increasing access tariffs to network tubes. In addition to cutting back on planned expansion, the network is taking the following cost-saving actions, effective immediately:

  • Closing down our Antarctic server farm (Penguin1.UN.AA.GameSurge.net through Penguin5.UN.AA.GameSurge.net). The cost savings due to easy cooling is now outweighed by network data bottlenecks and the constant risk of computer racks "calving" off into the ocean.
  • The Board of Directors has agreed to serve for the 2009 calendar year with no direct or deferred compensation. In addition, other forms of executive compensation have been scaled down.
  • All support agents will receive a 20% reduction in salary. Selected agents will be offered early retirement packages, with up to 8 months of pay as a separation bonus.
  • Conformant ASCII characters will be sent using only 7 active bits, allowing up to 12.5% reduction in on-bit network bandwidth use compared to normal 8-bit (octet) traffic.
  • We are continuing to examine our ongoing operations for additional efficiencies and expect to contact Federal regulators to fully explore restructuring and ongoing liquidity options relating to current industrial programs.

    GameSurge Turns 5! - 02/17/2009 - Posted by pb

GameSurge is proud to bring you some awesome news: We just turned 5! But unlike your birthday (we hope, anyway), instead of you giving US presents, well, we're giving YOU some! Sponsored by Valve Software and Razer no less! We're having a little party on IRC in #5thAnniversary, where we're doing random giveaways. The real bread and butter, however is a major pair of contests where you can win a ton of Left4Dead swag or some Razer gear. You can't go wrong no matter what! Check out our Contest Details page for more information!

ClanShells delinked - 02/01/2009 - Posted by pb

ClanShells.DE.EU.GameSurge.net has decided to part company with us this week. I'd personally like to thank crazyiven, its admin, for the past 4.5 years of service to the network he's given. They'll both be missed. We've pointed their former DNS name at the EU server pool for the time being, but if you were using their server specifically to connect, you probably want to update your IRC client configuration.
